Modeling Writing
As adults we use writing every day to both preserve memories and communicate with others. We write so frequently and automatically that it is easy to forget to explain what we are writing and why to children. Take a few minutes each day to point out how you use writing and why you find it useful.
As you go about your regular activities, talk to your child about what you are doing:
"I think I'll send an email to grandma to ask her when she is coming to visit."
"I'm writing down this recipe so we will know how to make oatmeal cookies."
"Let's write that playdate on our calendar so we don't forget."
Simply sharing your thoughts about using writing with your child will help him understand and appreciate the practical implications of writing, build literacy skills, and foster an excitement for learning to write.
