What do you want to do for lunch bunch?, I asked. Here are some of their ideas....
"Experiments" said Jonathan
"What does that mean?"Jonathan responded that he has a book at home with fun things to do with baking soda. Alex said that experiments is "trying new things to see if it works", and Lucas said "like a test."
"You could make an Artist Class", said Alison.
"What kind of materials might an artist use?"
Friends came up with, paints, markers, an artist could use stickers, clay, But then Naomi asked:
Who is going to be the teacher for the artist class? What do you think WHO COULD TEACH THIS CLASS. Alison said, she could because she "is good at it".
"Sewing Class" ~"We are going to need fabric and thread" said friends. Then came the real planning of what to sew... more to follow...
"Music Class" ~ said Lucas. What do need for this class?
We need "instruments, microphone, guitar, and drums.
"Coloring" said friends.
"More cooking and clay too" said friends.
So.. the question still remains.. Who is going to teach these theme related classes???
It was decided that the children will be the teachers, with limited direction from the teacher.
Next Tuesday we will be conducting an experiment. Jonathan will look at his book, decide on the idea he wants to explore, and tell me what materials I need to have ready.
Providing children with the opportunities to take an active role in their learning encourages thinking/reflection/planning, promotes critical thinking, cooperation, builds leadership, and encourages more exploration and risk taking in a safe environment.
Looking forward to our many Scientist adventures with Tuesday lunch friends...
Alex, Alison, Becca, Jake, Jayden, Jonathan, Lucas, Naomi....
Wow! What a cool concept. I love the idea of the children lending their expertise. And that they'll have the experience of planning and carrying out an activity for their classmates. Most kids don't ever get to do that.
ReplyDeleteThis is AMAZING! Jake is ABSOLUTELY LOVING Lb! Thank you so much! Great ideas!
ReplyDeleteLucas was SO excited about "teaching" a music class - such a great idea!!
