The magic moment

We have a new toy in our classroom. It is called Wedgits. It is a series of creative building blocks that can be arranged in various shapes and designs. It is a wonderful toy for open-ended play and for a child to use spatial relationships to build things. The only unfortunate thing about Wedgits is that there is a finite number of pieces with which to build. So, today we put the toy on the rectangle table and immediately Teddy, Avery and Jay were attracted to play there. As you can imagine, we ran out of pieces for each child to make the design he wanted. Soon we hear, "I need more green." "No, I need green." "Well, I need yellow." A little squabbling ensued and it was clear that no one was going to emerge a clear winner and get the number of pieces that he needed. As I walked over to help the boys settle the dilemma, Jay Green says, "I know. We can build something working together." Avery and Teddy thought that was a great idea. As you can see in this picture cooperative play followed Jay's suggestion. I think I may be out of a job if the children continue with this level of problem solving.
