The People

The Rainbow/Sunshine classroom has a collection of realistic looking "play people" that Sam has enjoyed since early in the school year. He has assigned names and roles to these people, sometimes identifying them with members of his own family. Often he arranges them on top of a bookcase, which he has established as a new play area.

Recently, the children have shown increasing interest in these people, and in playing cooperatively with one another while creating family scenariois: "Here comes the Grampa, he is coming to visit." "This is my mom, this is my dad, and who is this guy?" Here, Maddy joined Sam and was introduced to his characters, while taking others and assigning roles to them.

Lizzie finished her work at the easel and joined her classmates; they responded graciously, sharing the people so that they all had some.

Jared notices the trio playing with the people and approaches the group. Looks like a good thing going on here! In this sequence of photos we see how our two and three year olds are growing in their play and in the social skills that facilitate cooperative play.
