The Bus

Today the children re-enacted Rosa Parks and the Montgomery bus boycott.
We made the sides of the bus yesterday, Rohan attached the bus to the seats and the children took over from there. They changed roles, alternating between being the bus driver, Rosa Parks, the police and the person who asked Rosa to give up her seat. There was also a jailer who put Rosa "behind bars" and allowed her to call Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Several different children led the bus boycott and walked to work. We talked about bravery, how Rosa Parks and MLK Jr. were brave and what bravery means to us. We read BRAVE IRENE by William Steig and the children all had different ideas about whether or not Irene was brave.
