Time to change the calendar!
On Thursday, we noticed a problem. The same problem we had noticed last month! When we get to the last day of the month, we need to change the calendar. The Kohavim children helped to move the numerals to change the calendar from October to November. Then it was time to add many messages! The children drew candlesticks and a Kiddish cup for Shabbat. They also wrote Shabbat (SHBT) and added the message to every Friday, showing their understanding that Shabbat is a reoccurring holiday that we celebrate every week on a specific day. They wrote November (NVMBR) which they attached to the top of the calendar with tape. Sabrina added messages to let us know about all the birthdays we would be celebrating in the month of November. She drew birthday cakes and wrote the names of the children by referring to a word ring that has all the Kohavim names on it. We now know we will celebrate Hannah, Eli, and Jacob's birthday this month. The children even added messages to the days when we have no school (NO SKL). When writing messages about the many important events happening in Kohavim, the children refer to print in their environment, such as a list or ring with the children's name, and use invented spelling. When a child uses invented spelling they demonstrate their knowledge of the alphabetic principle, the idea that one can use alphabet letters to represent sounds in words. How meaningful it is for the children to add messages to the calendar, and it's also supporting their literacy development!
