Sometimes a CD is not just a CD

Sam was fascinated by the different colors he saw reflected in the sheen on the CD. Our activity was to decorate the CD with different kinds of paint and materials. The next step was to put a small cork in the center so the CD could be used as a dreidel. Sam's sustained interest in looking at the CD before painting it caused me to look at it as well and to appreciate the wonder that he saw in it. It really is quite something to try and see an old and familiar object from a new perspective presented by a child. This is yet another example of the importance of slowing down, letting yourself be interrupted, and appreciating how a child sees the world.

Thank you to Mary Ann Woods for the idea of making dreidels using CDs and cork.
