It's the first day of school, and Chrysanthemum is sure that it's going to be absolutely perfect. Just like her name, Chrysanthemum. But her classmates have other ideas. "If I had a name like yours, I'd change it," says Victoria. But when a teacher with an equally precious and priceless and fascinating name comes to her defense, Chrysanthemum's school days go from absolutely dreadful to perfectly delightful.
"Chrysanthemum is a book that is used in professional roles undertaken...to demonstrate that we need to be...sensitive to the diverse populations in our schools and how important it is to acknowledge the individual identities that make up our communities."
The children had the opportunity to write and decorate their names with jewels and glitter. They counted the letters in our names and figured out that Nathaniel has the most letters in his name, and Mia has the least. Everyone enjoyed the process of exploring/counting the letters in their own special name.
A great way to help the children recognize and celebrate their own uniqueness. This will be a great skill for them as the launch into the bigger world.
