Our water bottle experiments

This week the Haifa All Stars have been conducting water experiments. We had five different bottles filled half way with water. One bottle was plain water, another salt water, another sugar water and then a bottle with pink food coloring and another with blue food coloring. We put the bottles outside on the wall in the playground to see if they would freeze. Before we placed them outdoors, each child made a prediction as to which bottle would freeze first. Only one of the bottles froze after the first 24 hours. To our surprise, the bottle with the blue water froze first. Many of the children had predicted that this would happen. The next day all of the water bottles had frozen except the salt water bottle. We explained to the children that the temperature here is not cold enough for the salt water to freeze.
Today we made another prediction as to which bottle would melt first. Most of the children picked the blue water bottle. Stay tuned for further results from our experiment. We also are working on forming crystals with warm water and epsom salt. And we also planted an amarylis plant. We have indeed been very busy with our science explorations this week!
