Democracy in the Works

We came together as a new school year and a group of boys and girls. We asked the boys and girls since it was a new school year with a new group of boys and girls, if they would like to consider a new name for our class or keep the name Scientists???

How could we decide what to do?

We decided to take a vote. It was almost unanimous 1 for Scientist and 13 to change.
Then came the process of narrowing down the many possibilities.
We asked the boys and girls to think about the beautiful things found in nature.

They thought of:

Rainbows, the sun, trees, bugs, grass, the forest, the stars, horses, spiders, stripes, wind, and zebras. Clearly all these represent things of beauty to the beholder. I think it is wonderful that spiders was considered a creature of beauty, thou I must mention I was secretly hoping this would not be the winner.

In reading the history of the children's name through out the week many are inquiring about the "Hebrew" name for things. Luckily Rohan was in class and helped us translate the words on our list.

Since we are a Jewish preschool we thought it would be nice to be called by our Hebrew name and important that the children be comfortable with the sound.

Then there was the vote: Stripes (Pasim) 1, Trees (Etzim) 2, and Stars (Kohavim) 9, Zebra 2.

So we will be known as The Stars ~ Kohavim class.
Then came the celebration!!! Some boys and girls chose Stars because they are bright and shimmery.

  1. Mazel tov on selecting your new name. The Levana class translates to moon. Now at TBSCC we have the stars to go with the moon. Beautiful!

  2. "And on the 4th day, G-d created the two great lights in the sky...and the STARS...and G-d saw that they were good." And (counting last Wednesday) on the 4th day of class, our children created Stars too...and it was VERY GOOD! Congratulations on the radiant new identity...truly beautiful!

  3. We in the Markley family are VERY excited about the new name. Kochavim! So cool and new and democratic...Mia was thrilled (as is evident from the picture) that her favorite idea won the vote! (Which is a good thing, because I am guessing the reaction would have been equally dramatic if her favorite wasn't chosen). I too love the new name A LOT!

  5. I LOVE the new name!! I must add that Jesse told us that he picked STRIPES. . . .proud moment as a parent to know that he went with his "true" favorite and not what his friends picked. . .even if Stripes didn't win!!
