A Placemat for Reading
Children need many opportunities to practice being readers in order to understand the purpose of the written word. The Unicorns each made a Shabbat placemat at the beginning of the year. This placemat features HaMotzi, the blessing recited over bread. Each Friday, the table is set with the children's placemats, and as the sit down and see their placemats, they are reminded of the blessing. Lily glanced down at the words, noticing that some words were in Hebrew and some were in English. It is encounters such as these that will prepare our children for a lifetime of success in reading.
